DUSU elections: High Court issues notice to Centre, Delhi University over ‘privately procured EVMs’

The High Court issued notice to the DU and the concerned parties on the petition challenging the Dusu elections and sought the response. The three student leaders of the NSUI have demanded to declare the student union elections as invalid through this petition.

They say that EVMs used for elections were tampered with. The next hearing in the case will be on October 29. Justice Siddharth Mridul has issued notice to DU, Chief Election Officer of the DU, Central Government Election Commission, Doosu Chairman Ankit Basoya, Vice President Shakti Singh and Joint Secretary Jyoti Chaudhary on the petition of Student Union of Saints Sunny Chillar, Lina and Saurabh Yadav.

In the election of the DUSU, ABVP occupied three positions including the President. While Akash Chaudhary won the post of secretary from NSUI. Sunny Chillar, the election of the post of president, lost to ABVP candidate, Ankit Basoya.

Anil Soni, a permanent advocate in the court on behalf of the Central Government, accepted the notice. The Court has directed the Chief Election Officer to keep the EVMs and Paper Trails used in the election till the settlement of the petition.

The court refused to admit the plea of his lawyer to give a short date for the hearing or to stop the functioning of the new executive.

While examining the petition, senior advocate Anup George Chaudhary said that the Dusu election is illegal because EVMs have been tampered with in it. His lawyer said that ECM was taken out of the Election Commission without taking EVM from the Election Commission for Doose.

Polling was closed for nearly five hours during the elections and seven machines lost in 126 EVMs. This information was given to the election officials. Sunny Chillar of that time was ahead of 42 hundred votes.
